Forest Air is an international, not-for-profit association on a mission to empower paramotor pilots worldwide.

Basically; Extreme Botany and citizen science at its best

We bring together these skilled aviators with leading forest scientists, local schools, and sustainable agriculture projects to tackle pressing environmental challenges.

In collaboration with National Geographic, Kew Gardens, Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI), and Rainforest Concern, we’re amplifying our impact and driving real change.

Our exciting activities include:

  • Collecting plant, soil, and water samples for groundbreaking DNA analysis
  • Conducting aerial surveys and launching seeding missions to rejuvenate ecosystems
  • Advancing forest conservation and combating desertification
  • Training pilots in specialised skills and promoting citizen science initiatives
  • Exploring hard-to-reach areas through extreme botany for vital research

Together with our partners, we’re making a powerful difference in forest preservation, restoration, and the global fight against desertification.

Imagine...

In a future where trained paramotor pilots survey forests and deserts, they act as essential tools for botanical scientists, identifying seed-bearing plants and mapping areas in need of ecological restoration under the guidance of scientific needs. These pilots assist in replanting endangered mangroves, dry riverbeds, and arid deserts, optimizing ecosystem recovery by timing seed dispersal before seasonal rains. Equipped with drones, they conduct grid surveys and monitor environmental changes, all aligned with research objectives.

Collaborating with a global network of botanical gardens, the pilots help source and strategically introduce rare, resilient plant species into local projects, providing invaluable data that enhances our understanding of fragile ecosystems.

Local schoolchildren view these pilots as heroes, engaging with them to geolocate plants, collect seeds for community banks, and analyze data. Through hands-on experiences and shared missions, they learn about forest restoration, soil health, and desertification reversal, linking ecosystem vitality to their future. Social media plays a vital role in connecting schools and communities, allowing them to share their progress and discoveries with a wider audience.

At the heart of this initiative are local communities, whose ecological knowledge shapes restoration strategies, ensuring that projects are grounded in local expertise—whether reforesting, reversing desertification, or rejuvenating nutrient-depleted soils.

"Forest Air comes at a time when ecosystems around the world need our help like never before in human history. We need to restore and protect forest, its biodiversity and native peoples, but we need to work faster. Tied to offices we all need ears and all-seeing eyes on the ground and in real time. Forest Air are these eyes and hands to stop the first fire, to collect the last seed, to monitor forest and community health and watch over the first shoots to restore life - our life and our hearts"

Dr Oli Whaley, Chair Rainforest Concern, Research Associate Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh (RBGE), Research Associate Royal Botanic Gardens Kew (RBGK), Science strategy advisor to Forest Air.
